What to do if you have lost a pet
****Come by Sevier Animal Care Center to do a lost pet walkthrough. Please bring a lost flyer with you.
Please note that we provide an exam on every stray upon intake which includes vaccinations, parasite treatment, and microchip scanning. Because of this we do charge a small reclaim fee of $30. We also charge $10 for each additional day that the animal is in our care. Please ask about low-cost spay/neuter and microchipping options.
What should you do if you lose your pet?
1)Absolutely first thing you should check our shelter. Any animal picked up stray in Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, and Pittman Center comes to us. We are open 1 to 5 PM every day except Mondays. We also post every stray we get in on our Facebook page. Every pet is also loaded on this website in real time. Check with us every couple of days as we only hold strays for 72 hours.
2) Do a search in your Facebook search box for all the lost and found pages in the area. The best one to check in our area is
Sevier County, Tennessee - Missing Pets
Don’t forget that our community has 12-13 Facebook community groups. For example: Sevierville speaks out, Pigeon Forge speaks out, Kodak/Wears valley/Gatlinburg speaks out, neighbors of Seymour, etc.
Also don’t forget to check craigslist.
3) Check with your neighbors, the mailman, and any businesses or local vets in your area.
4) If you are close to a county line, make sure you check with the animal shelter in the next county over.
5) Post flyers around your neighborhood and around town.
6) Leave some of your pet’s bedding on your front porch along with the food. Dogs and cats find their way by smell.
7) Also notify the Humane Society in our area

When your beloved dog or cat strays from home, it can be a traumatic experience for both of you. Here are some tips that we hope will help you find your pet.
- Contact local animal shelters and animal control agencies. File a lost pet report with every shelter within a 60-mile radius of your home and visit the nearest shelters daily, if possible. To find your local shelters google search your area. Provide these agencies with an accurate description and a recent photograph of your pet. Notify the police if you believe your pet was stolen.
- Internet and social media. Check craigslist under the lost section every day. Facebook reunites pets more than any other medium. FB has a search function in which you can search for missing pet groups. It is highly recommended that you post a picture pf your missing pet in every on line medium mentioned.
- Search the neighborhood. Walk or drive through your neighborhood several times each day. Ask neighbors, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Hand out a recent photograph of your pet and information on how you can be reached if your pet is found.
- Advertise. Post notices at grocery stores, community centers, veterinary offices, traffic intersections, at pet supply stores and other locations. Also, place advertisements in newspapers and with radio stations. Include your pet’s sex, age, weight, breed, color and any special markings. When describing your pet, leave out one identifying characteristic and ask the person who finds your pet to describe it.
- Be wary of pet-recovery scams. When talking to a stranger who claims to have found your pet, ask him to describe the pet thoroughly before you offer any information. If he does not include the identifying characteristic you left out of the advertisements, he may not really have your pet. Be particularly wary of people who insist that you give or wire them money for the return of your pet.
- Don’t give up your search. Animals that have been lost for months have been reunited with their owners.
